I'm CORRUPT!!!

Whenever I  heard or read about corruption, my initial response was disgust. I mean that's got to be natural for everyone, who likes to give money for a task for which not a single penny should be taken from you, but when you experience it, by yourself for the first time, trust me it will take your disgust to a whole new level. For me the initial reaction was complete shock.
I was absolutely stunned when this person asked me to give him money to verify my documents for the passport verification. This guy will probably be paid twice the amount I gave him, by the Govt. of  India for just sanctioning the documents which were completely legit and verified. I know I'm a lousy spender, I don't really think before I spend but I know one thing for sure that I don't want to spend my father's 'hard earned' money on this thing certainly.

The most astounding thing about this incident was that the person who asked for money was like "Dekho beta sarkari fees se to hamara to kuch nai hoga. apko zyada dena hi padega" with no sign of shame on his face. How can a person not have even a small amount of hesitation before asking for a bribe? and that too from a college student? How can I arrange for a 1000 bucks in such a short time and that too at this time of the night.
It was the first time I personally had slipped bribe into some person's pocket so I freaked out and called my dad and asked him to talk to that person, and his reply was beyond the unexpected. He asked me to go to the nearest ATM and take out a 1000 bucks and give it to him. When your own father says that to you, you feel like this is the only way out of this. So I was on my way to the ATM and on the way I found my friend whom I told about all this and then he went with me to the office and helped me lessen the amount of the bribe and I couldn't believe myself but I said "Meharbani Sir!" to him before I left. I said thank you to a person who took money from me just because he wanted to take money from me, not because it was required.

I honestly feel ashamed to have been a part of this corruption system. It just doesn't feel right to be a part of something that you never want to. It's easy to be disgusted about something but when it comes to raising your voices against something wrong, it takes a lot and I mean a butt load of courage to stand up and refuse to give any kind of a bribe to a person or any form of corruption for that matter. So now I know the value of the courage many people have gathered to stand up for their rights and more importantly corruption. I used to respect the people who stood up for something but now that I've witnessed it for myself I respect those people even more.

We all might say that we should all stand up whenever we see anything wrong happening in front of us but take it from that it takes some serious balls to really stand up for anything no matter how big or how small. When the moment comes in your life, you ill understand what I am talking about. Some of us might get away with it by a simple bribe, but some others like me might feel helpless not have stood up for something that was wrong and there will be some who will stand up to the authority and challenge them.

Nothing more special to write about this time, I think I've had enough of my special 'Corrupt' day.

  1. corruption is not just about giving bribe to someone. all are corrupted, if he/she is not being able to deliver a thing for what they are required to. even if you are late for any official work you are considered as corrupted. So before you point fingers make sure you hands are clean and its your life their is no one to judge but you..
